Book Cover

So, on the advice of some friends, I thought I'd start posting some of my attempts at illustration/graphic design. This one is the cover for a heroic fantasy book my brother is self publishing.

The tower, the staraxe, triangle, flames, and lettering were done by hand with colored pencil, then scanned into the computer for some slight touching up and realignment. Finally I added the red background from a photograph. On the whole it ended up pretty well (better on paper, believe me). I'm not happy about the lettering though...

You can find out more about the book here.

  1. In all honesty the lettering is pretty good! What don't you like about it? I especially like the way you drew "By Daniel Sampson." That part flows really well.

  2. Hey thanks! I felt like the coloring should have been more consistent...

  3. Photoshop can fix anything! well, almost anything, but definetly that.... OR you can use a colorless blender on the original artwork. It makes colored pencil super smooth. It's kind of magic :) I use them all the time.
Here's a link of what it looks like:

There are really no good art stores anywhere near you, but Michael's would have something basic like this :) If you ever feel like it, there is a Dick Blick Store in Shaumburg. It's awesome!
